Works Great – This is my first foray into a video doorbell, and a couple of things come to mind. First it’s nearly dead-simple to install and wire up. I will say that the instruction video provided by Google is a bit wonky and a little confusing, so I recommend finding other step by step videos out there to assist you. Secondly, Google’s presentation and packaging is a breath of fresh air. The packaging and attention to detail is great. Yeah, it’s packaging, no big deal, but it translates to the product itself.

Camera is great, doorbell sucks – I bought this primarily for the camera. I moved to a new apartment and my old units always had windows near the entry way so I could just use a normal security camera. The new apartment is not designed like this so I needed a wireless solution that didn’t require mounting and I thought a doorbell camera would be simplest. The camera is great. The field of view catches motion even at the edge of the camera view. Alerts are timely. Camera is clear. The three hour saved recording works for my needs, but I would definitely pay for the subscription for longer video saves if I was worried about safety or break ins (i mostly use it to know when packages are delivered or people stop by). The battery life is great for where I live. I get 3-4 months on one charge (I average 5 events of recording a day – I imagine if you’re in a more active area the battery will drain faster). You can easily turn off the camera temporarily from the app, which was particularly helpful when my neighbors moved out while I was at work and I started getting alerts every two minutes as each mover walked by. The single complaint I have is that the app doesn’t distinguish a doorbell ring from the rest of the alerts. I honestly didn’t care about having a doorbell, but people see it and assume they can use it, but if Im not near my phone or I don’t immediately check an alert, I have no clear indication someone has rung the doorbell. Its absolutely absurd that they couldn’t just set up the battery operated doorbells with a distinct alert through the app for the actual doorbell. I believe I read that there are compatible speakers or other devices you can pair with it for that functionality, but I refuse to purchase them on principle alone. Id just as soon put up a sign saying to knock, instead of investing in secondary equipment to accomplish what the original equipment is literally designed for by name. Aside from that complaint it meets my needs.

Great value – Google has 3 different products they sell currently, making this a very confusing buying process for me. I wanted my doorbell to be wired, I didn’t want another device to worry about charging. Well, my existing doorbell has a transformer on it that I was replacing and it seems like that keeps the battery charged on the device. I also bought the Google Nest Doorbell and didn’t like that it natively used the Nest App, I wanted it all in the Google Home app.

Potential chime issues – Good picture, easy installation if wires and screw terminals don’t scare you.

High quality video, intuitive app, difficult to differentiate – I bought this product for personal security. It was very easy to set up as the google home app (free) that works with the doorbell walked me through every step of setting up and installing the doorbell. The image quality of the videos and recordings are nearly crystal clear and the doorbell has both day vision (color) and night vision (black & white). The app also has so many features that you can use to personalize activity zones, change dark & light vision, time for each recording etc. The only feedback I have for potential buyers is that in order to set up face identification and differentiate between normal and abnormal people, vehicles, animals etc. you need to subscribe. Therefore, if you do not wish to subscribe, your doorbell will send you alerts if a car drives by, a person walks by, or even if you come back and unlock your door. It pretty much warns you about everything which can be a little repetitive, however to not have to subscribe and get a lot of great features, I am happy with the doorbell. I did notice on other doorbells require subscriptions for added features and saving video recordings, but I think this nest doorbell has the most free features without a subscription. Another thing to note is that the app allows you to view, delete, and save recording clips (you can also personalize how long of clips you want recorded) and you can also shut off recording and only view live feed footage. The doorbell is also really easy to charge and the app tells you how much battery percentage and projected charge life-span your doorbell has so you will know when it’s time to recharge. I cannot speak to the length of charge (I have the wireless version) as I’ve only had installed it for 24 hrs, however since yesterday the app tells me I have 97% and 3 months of battery life. If you’re thinking of getting this doorbell, I highly recommend.
